Panels get dirty out of sight, and that is what makes them different from a window. A smeared pane nags at you every time you walk past it. An array faces the sky somewhere you never stand, so nothing about it ever asks for attention. If yours have not been cleaned since the day they went up, that is who this is for.
What we will not do is put a percentage on what you get back. That depends on how much was sitting on your glass, and it is not a figure anyone can hand you off a form. We would rather tell you that than pick a number that sounds good.
Worried Bird cleans glass for a living, and a panel is a pane of glass with an expensive job to do. Getting a picture window clean without leaving a mark on it is the whole trade here, and your panels are the same problem on a steeper surface.
Solar Panel Cleaning questions
Does cleaning solar panels actually improve output?
Yes, when they're genuinely dirty. Panels make power from light reaching the cells, and dust, pollen, hard-water spots, and bird droppings block it. Bird droppings are the worst offender because they shade a cell completely, and a shaded cell can drag down the whole string. If your production has drifted down over a dusty season and the panels look hazy, cleaning them is the cheapest thing to try.
How often should panels be cleaned?
Once or twice a year suits most homes. Go more often if you're near open fields, dirt roads, active construction, or heavy tree cover, or if you're somewhere dust and hard water are constant — those panels get dirty considerably faster than ones in a wetter, greener climate. If it rains regularly where you are and your production looks normal, once a year is plenty.
Will cleaning void my solar warranty?
Cleaning itself doesn't — most manufacturers list periodic cleaning as normal maintenance. What voids warranties is damage: high pressure, abrasive pads, harsh chemicals, or someone standing on the panels. We use purified water, soft non-abrasive tools, and reach equipment so we're not walking on the array. Check your specific installer's terms if you're unsure, and tell us if there's anything unusual about your system.
Why purified water instead of soap?
Because soap leaves a film and tap water leaves mineral spots, and both of those do the same thing dirt does — block light. Purified water has the minerals stripped out, so it lifts the soil and then dries without leaving anything behind. It also avoids putting detergents on the anti-reflective coating on the panel surface, which is the layer that makes the panel efficient in the first place.
Do you clean ground-mounted and commercial arrays?
Yes. Rooftop residential arrays, ground mounts, carports, and commercial installations. Ground mounts are usually simpler and faster; large commercial arrays get scoped and scheduled around your operations. Can you do it while I'm at work?
Yes. Panel cleaning is entirely exterior, so nobody needs to be home. We'll need access to the array and to an outdoor water source. You'll get the walkthrough by phone or photo instead of in person, and we'll flag anything we noticed up there — loose mounting hardware, damaged panels, animals nesting under the array — even though we don't do electrical work.
